Eating Right in a Hurry: 9 Meal Prep Tips for Busy Parents
As a busy mom, I know how challenging it can be to prepare healthy meals with 3 hungry boys wanting to eat right away. This offers some great tips! I do love my Tower Garden which I'm preparing to bring inside for the fall and winter. It's so convenient to always have fresh lettuce for salad! Once I figure out where to put a second one, I will be ordering it :)

Laugh - it's good for you!
Oh my... it's been forever since I've been out here. I've been doing some amazing inner work and I'm learning new skills to help others with. But today, I want to remind everyone to laugh.Laughing is important on so many levels. It is great for you physically. It can offer a great workout if you laugh long enough. It is great for the stomach muscles. It helps to move stale air out of your lungs and bring in new air which is essential for physical well-being and healing!!
And not to be ignored... it feels great!! It is good for the soul. Allow yourself a good laugh. In fact, go out of your way to make yourself laugh. Laugh for no reason. Feel silly - that's good. You are adding cheer to your life and the whole world with your laughter and silliness!! Enjoy!

Hugs for Health
Are you feeling down? Did you get your hugs today?
For a long time, I didn't initiate hugging people because I didn't know how they would respond but then I just started. I'd hug people when I'd see them in the office. I'll admit some people found it weird but more people looked forward to my daily hugs and even started hugging other people, too. It completely changes the mood of the office. Try it.
I also will hug other parents at my kids sporting events. Again, at first they don't know what to make of it but soon, they look forward to it and even seek me out to give me a hug.
Try it and let me know what your experience is with it. I think you'll find that you are happier and the people around you are, too. And magic begins when we are all feeling happy and loving!!
Don't forget to report back.

10 Happiness Habits
Happiness really is a choice and even though it doesn't always seem like it, it is in our grasp at every moment.
Here are some things to try when you are not feeling happy:
Here are some things to try when you are not feeling happy:
- Smile - the act of smiling produces physical changes in your body that automatically improve your mood even if it is a fake smile.
- Laugh - yes, laugh for no reason. I love laughter yoga which is basically that - laughing for no reason! And just for the record, fake laughter helps you as much as real laughter. I have usually found that my fake laughs quickly turn into real laughs!
- Read an uplifting book - the topic is personal to you because it needs to be something that makes you feel happy, hopeful, inspired, loved, etc.
- Write in a journal - getting your thoughts on paper has been shown to be very healing on all levels.
- Help someone else - helping people and being of service provides us with a feeling that can not be matched.
- Write or think about what you have to be grateful for - this may seem obvious or if you are really down, you may have to work at this. It can be that you are alive; that we have running water and electricity and indoor plumbing; that you can walk, think, talk, hear, see; that you have someone you love or that loves you; that you have food to eat; that you have a roof over your head; or, that you have a means to read this.
- Exercise - get moving. Even going for a simple walk will improve your mood.
- Go out in nature - Being in nature has a way of grounding us and improving our mood. It doesn't matter if it is the beach, the mountains, or a city park, it will help. Take in your surroundings and feel your mood improve.
- Meditate - If quieting your mind seems impossible, try a guided imagery type of meditation. There are so many different ways to meditate and you can find the one that works for you. Just spend some quiet time with a simple focus.
- Pray - If you don't feel comfortable with praying to God - think of it as asking your highest self to answer your prayers. It can also be angels, saints, ancestors, whomever you feel comfortable to call on for assistance. Studies have shown that prayer works.
I invite you to incorporate these into your daily life and let me know what results you notice. You will start to feel happier. I am certain of it.

Smile
Remember to smile. Smiling releases chemicals in your brain that actually improve your mood. In addition to that, smiling at others makes them happy and they tend to smile back which also improves your mood. The ripple effect of one smile can make a world of difference.
So today, make an effort to smile at everyone you see. Let me know how you feel and how your day goes!

Forgiveness: The Other F-word
The funny thing about forgiveness is that we often think it's about the other person or situation. Sometimes we also don't want to do it because we know we are right and they are wrong! The fact is, that's irrelevant to forgiving. Right and wrong don't come into play with forgiveness. As Louise Hay says, "Forgiveness opens our hearts to self-love." It in turn opens us up to joy and success.
Forgiveness doesn't mean the other person was right or justified or that their behavior is acceptable and should be condoned. Forgiveness is about letting go of the anger and the resentment which live inside you. It's like the old saying that resentment is like swallowing poison and expecting the other person to die. It doesn't work that way - you are the one affected and resentment and unforgiveness eat away at you every day whether you realize it or not. They take away your joy and your life.
The past is over and it only exists now in our minds. Yet we let it keep tormenting us on a daily basis. It's time to let go. It's time to forgive everyone who has done anything to hurt you. You can start by just affirming, "I am willing to forgive _________." It also sometimes helps to remember that no one hurts another person if they aren't hurting inside. While that doesn't make it right, perhaps we can have understanding and compassion.
It's also important to forgive ourselves. Sometimes we feel bad because we yelled at someone or we didn't do something we said we were going to do. It happens, it's part of being human. We need to let it go. We need to forgive ourselves and love ourselves unconditionally. When possible, it's great to apologize if we feel bad about something or to make it up to someone if we can. But either way, you must forgive yourself. When we feel bad about anything, we are more likely to do things that make us feel bad again.
Your assignment today is to think of someone who you need to forgive and start the process. Remember, this is about you, not them. They don't necessarily even need to know you are forgiving them. If the situation is such that you want to tell them and that will help you and not cause any issues then by all means you can. The most important part of the exercise is to forgive. Feel what you need to feel about person and the situation and then let it go. It's important that we acknowledge our feelings. Allow them because they are important but then release them so you can move on and live freely.
As always, I welcome your feedback and would love to hear about your successes and challenges with forgiveness. It is a wonderful teacher if we are open to its lessons!

Patience - yep, again!
I know I talk about the importance of patience a lot but it's what I need to work on and I know I'm not alone. So often we get discouraged if things don't go exactly the way we want when we want. Let's put a stop to that today :)
If you have a goal, it may take time to achieve that. As you may know, I have recently taken up running. Okay, some people would call what I do wogging. A combination of walking and jogging but I will get better every time I get out there as long as I'm consistent and keep at it. It's easy to get discouraged and say, I can't do a marathon that will take me forever and I don't have the patience to walk it - and perhaps not the muscle strength (however, walking is a lot easier than running!) I am basing that on my present physical condition. But guess what, I can change that IF I have patience!!
The same goes for any goal - weight loss is a great example, too. Often people look at a 1 pound weight loss as nothing when they have 80 more pounds to lose but the fact is, it's a step in the right direction and with every step - no matter how small - you are getting closer to your goals!!
So my goals for today are to really ask myself what I can do for me today to bring me joy and get me closer to my goals and then listen! Often we ask the question but when we don't have an immediate answer, we stop listening!
Take time today to be patient with yourself and take note of any progress you have made toward your goals. It doesn't matter how small. Write it down and celebrate yourself. Take another action step in the right direction and applaud your courage and determination.
Enjoy your day. Be patient and trust that all is well and you can do anything!!

The Time Is Now
I did it!! I completed my first timed 10K today!! I did a 10K today in 1:28:39 :) I know to avid runners that may not be a super fast time but I am very excited. I completed it. I wouldn't get swept at Disney :) and that's really what is most important to me.
One of the things I think about is how important it is to be happy with our own progress and where we are right now. We can't start somewhere that we aren't :) I know I'm not alone in thinking that it would be so much easier to run if I weighed less and in the past that has prevented me from starting. How silly is that? how human is that? We all do it in certain circumstances. We compare ourselves to others and how well they do something but you know what - they didn't start there. And we have to start where we are. If I'm in Boston and want to go to LA, I can't start in Phoenix. I need to start where I am. The same goes for any of our goals. It doesn't matter where we are, we can get to our destination if we accept where we are and take action to get where we want to go.
If walking is all you can do - do it!! You don't need to be able to run. If you want to run, you'll get there. If you choose to keep walking, that's fine, too. There is no need to compare to others - we never come out exactly equal because no two people are exactly alike with all the same experiences and reactions. It's just the way it is!!
So if you don't have a regular exercise routine, will you get out there today and start moving? Remember to listen to your body and do what you can do. Tomorrow you'll be able to do a little more and the next day, even more than that.
Please let me know how it goes. Smile, be happy, and focus on all you have and have accomplished and more will come!! Patience :)

Believe In Yourself
How often do we look for the answers to life's challenges outside of ourselves? I believe that is one of the reasons that I read so many self-help books - to find the answers I've been looking for. But the truth is all the answers we need are inside us. We have them, we just need to quiet our minds and listen. I remember the first time you could ask God, Source, the Universe for help or answers through prayers but to hear the answers you must meditate or quiet your mind. It makes so much sense.
What is all comes down to is believing in ourselves and our power. We all have it. The only difference is that some of us accept it and allow it and others of us don't believe enough in ourselves to even try to truly listen for the answers. I challenge each one of us to allow our power to shine through. Our power is our light and it is a good thing. People who use "power" to control or hurt others are not really using their power - that's a lack of self-esteem and true self-confidence. We don't need to be afraid of our power, we need to own it and allow it to flow freely through us every day. It will inevitably benefit us and everyone around us. Believe in yourself. I do. You can do anything you put your mind to. You are an amazing person who can have the life you dream of and you can make a positive difference in the world every day!!
Make today amazing!! Believe in yourself. Go share your light and your power with the world and see how things begin to change for the better every day!!

January Challenge
Happy New Year!! As the new year begins many people make resolutions for change. The problem is that resolutions are notorious for not being kept. I believe that is because we think of them the wrong way.
I gave up making resolutions but I do make goals both short and long term every year! One of the important aspects of goals is to known and articulate why you are making them. To say you want to lose weight is great but to say how much weight, by when, and why give it much more power. Why do you want to lose weight? Do you really want to or is it something you think you should do? Have you given any thought to why you want to? How will you feel if you do and how will you feel if you don't? Is there a difference? The deeper you can go into the reasons you want to do something, the better. If the reasons are really important to you and you keep those in mind you are more likely to actually follow through on what is need to achieve your goal.
I have created a challenge for myself. I believe in planning to make a change for 30 days. We can do anything for 30 days. If it feels good, we can continue it and if not - release it. It's done.
I invite you to join me in this challenge at whatever level feels good to you. I will report back at the end of the month to let you know how I did and I'd love to hear how you did, too!
Every day in January I'm planning to do the following:
1. Meditate
2. Run or Walk (3 miles minimum each day)
3. Nature - get out in nature and enjoy the world around me
4. Mirror Exercise - before going to bed every night I will look at myself in the mirror and compliment myself on my achievements for the day (big or small) and tell myself "I Love You!" ***
5. Goals - review them morning and night
6. Inspiration - read inspiring books at least 5 minutes
7.Sit-Ups - Do at least 30
8. Push-Ups - Do at least 15
9. Fruits/Veggies - each at least 5 servings
*** The mirror exercise sounds "weird" to people at first but people who have done it have had wonderful results. Often people may not even know that they have low self-esteem or harbor some inner anger or guilt that is actually holding them back. In doing the mirror exercise, we allow ourselves to have unconditional love from ourselves which is the most empowering gift we can give ourselves. We deserve it.
Please share your thoughts, comments, and results with me.

Childhood Obesity - Run Miles to Decrease It
I wanted to ask for your assistance. My son, Dylan, is in 8th grade and doing a capstone project to raise awareness about and funds to decrease childhood obesity.
There is a free app called Run4Good by Saucony that donates money based on miles logged. He has a form to "pledge" miles to walk in December and a team on the app called "Team Dylan". I wanted to ask you to join his cause by filling out the form and using the app while committing to walk or run a certain number of mile in December under Team Dylan. It is great motivation to keep or get active during this holiday season and it is for a good cause.
If you would share this, too, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!!
The form can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1A_kEYuQnHdoylfIL5ikAEBs6OMM72WrSgBN3IdAd194/viewform
Together we can make a difference!! Also, by pledging miles, we are all getting more active and keeping ourselves healthier at the same time. And for some us, this may lead to lowering the number of overweight and obese adults in the world :)
The following is taken directly from Saucony's Run For Good page (http://www.sauconyrunforgood.com/facts-about-childhood-obesity/).

CHILDHOOD OBESITY FACTS
- Government statistics show that over 30% of children and adolescents are obese or overweight. Almost 20% of children ages 6 to 11 and 18% of those 12 to 19 are considered obese.
- Obesity most commonly begins in childhood between the ages of 5 and 6, and during adolescence.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over the past three decades the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years. It has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years.
- Studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has a 70 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. This increases to 80 percent if one or more parents are overweight or obese.
- Doctors agree that the two primary factors in creating obese children and teens are poor food choices and less exercise on a daily basis.
- Type 2 diabetes, previously considered an adult disease, has increased dramatically in children and adolescents. Overweight and obesity are closely linked to type 2 diabetes.
- Researchers have found that overweight children are at a greater risk of school absenteeism than their normal-weight peers.
- According to the CDC, children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or running, should make up most of this daily activity.
- Doctors and other health care professionals are the best people to determine whether your child or adolescent’s weight is healthy.

Have You Had Your Blueberries Today?
Most people think eating healthy is complicated and takes too much time. It is true that processed junk food is often more readily available and doesn't require any preparation But it really isn't that difficult to add healthy food into your daily routine and start eliminating some of the foods that are not good for you and that eventually lead to illness.
Let's start with blueberries.
Did you know that blueberries...
Let's start with blueberries.
Did you know that blueberries...
- are low in fat (1 cup of blueberries has about 80 calories and basically no fat) (I don't actually recommend a low fat diet. We need healthy fats in our diet for optimal health but I'll discuss that another day.)
- banish belly fat
- prevent cancer by attacking free radicals, causing cancer cell death, and blocking the growth of tumor cells
- strengthen your immune system
- soften skin with their antioxidants
- are high in fiber which is crucial for healthy digestion
- lower the risk of age related macular degeneration which is the leading cause of vision loss in older people
- decrease the chances of heart attack in women
- reverse age-related memory loss due to their flavonoids
- prevent and heal urinary tract infections (UTIs) because they contain compounds that prevent bacteria from sticking to bladder walls
- lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes
You can easily add blueberries to your diet by having them plain or adding the to cereal or smoothies. I would highly recommend organic. I have read that if you are not eating organic, the wild blueberries may be a better choice. I also firmly belief that if it comes down to eating non-organic blueberries (or any fruit or vegetable) or not eating them, the benefits of eating them are worth eating them versus not.
There are probably even additional benefits but you can see that this is a super healthy food which is very easy to add to your diet.

Simple Steps to Become Fit
Have you noticed how some people are just fit? How is that? Well... to be truly fit doesn't "just happen." If you want to be fit, you will need to work on that. However, it doesn't have to be "work". We'll talk later about ways to make fitness fun. It is easier to create new healthy habits that last when we get enjoyment from them.
1. Decide what you want in terms of your fitness
Often we don't get what we want because we haven't clearly determined what it is that we want. That applies to all areas of our lives not just fitness. But if you say, "I want to be fit." Well, was does that mean to you? To some people it may simply be a number on a scale. To some people it may mean being able to keep up with their kids running in the back yard. Others may want to run a marathon. What does being fit mean to you?
You may think, well I know what being fit means. That's great, you are a step ahead of many of us. I still want you to be as specific as you can in terms of how you would measure that fitness.
If you are one of those who see fitness as a number on a scale, I do want to ask you to rethink that as the sole criteria. Our weight is important but is only one factor. Being a health and wellness coach, I immediately think of heart health when I think of fitness (also as just one factor) but we've really got to exercise that heart muscle for fitness.
Also, just because you don't want to be a body builder or look like one, that doesn't mean that weight training is not important. Building lean muscle mass is important for health and well-being at every age. It also doesn't have to come from going to a gym and lifting weights. There are many exercises that use your own body weight for strength training.
2. Write down your definition of fitness
Now that you've clarified it in your head, write it down. This helps to set your intention to achieve that level of fitness.
3. Create goals around your definition of fitness
All goals need to be SMART goals.
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time driven
Here's an example of a well-written goal. "I will run and complete a marathon by May 31, 2013 at 5 pm."
It is specific - running a marathon. It is measurable. It does say by when this will be completed. But now is it attainable and realistic? Are there any marathons happening at a location you can be at this month? Are you ready to run a marathon? If you are currently 100 pounds overweight and completely sedentary, you do not want to set a goal to run a marathon this month. You can absolutely set that as a goal but you want to be realistic in all aspects of the goal including time frame.
I always have long-term goals in all areas of my life but I find it very useful to have short term goals that when I achieve I move closer to the long-term goal and I have that feeling of accomplishment more often than if I have wait 5 years.
4. Start imagining yourself as that fit person you want to be

How do you feel? What do you look like? What kind of external feedback to you receive? Feel it. Enjoy it. Know that this is you!
Some people think of this visualization exercise as silly but it is much more powerful that people realize. Professional athletes use this all the time.
5. Make your fitness (and your health) a priority
When you opt not to do some form of exercise (gardening, running, jumping jacks, cleaning, dancing), what are you doing instead? What are you making a priority? Is that newest reality TV show really more important than your fitness. There are plenty of TV commercial based exercises that I'll share, too.
6. Take action
I know for years I have said that health and fitness were my priorities but never took action on it. In fact, I have studied health and fitness unofficially and officially for over thirty years. The reality, however, is that it has only been in the last few years that I have started applying all the knowledge I built up in that time :) I'm not yet at the fitness level I would like to be but I'm on my way.
7. Celebrate your actions
It is so important to celebrate or at the very least acknowledge our achievements. We often focus on what we didn't accomplish instead of what we did. So if you want to workout 5 days this week but only did 3, congratulate yourself for doing 3! Next week you can work toward the goal of 5.
8. Reward yourself
This goes along with the celebrating your successes but we feel good when we are rewarded. As such, we are more likely to keep going in that right direction. I do not recommend rewarding yourself with food but occasionally a nice, healthy meal can be the reward. If one of your goals is to become thinner and you've achieved that, I find it more fun to go out an get some new clothes that are smaller and reinforce my success!
All goals need to be SMART goals.Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic

Find An Exercise Partner
It's always more fun to do things with our friends. Exercise is no exception. Find a friend (old or new) who also wants to be more active and set a plan for what you'll do together. It can be as simple as going for a walk every day after the kids go off to school.Working out with a friend is more enjoyable and holds you accountable so you don't miss your workout.
Here are a few tips:
- Find someone who really wants to do this. You both want to motivate each other rather than talk each other out of exercising while having coffee and donuts instead.
- If you plan to go walking in the neighborhood, have a plan for rainy days or days that the weather keeps you inside. The right workout video can make all the difference in the world. Make sure you pick on that resonates with you or you won't do it.
- Make sure you both have similar exercise goals and objectives. If one of you is a couch potato and the other is already an avid exerciser, this may not make for a great partnership.
- Mix it up a little. Add weight training or yoga once a week.
- Make sure you both have a common time that will work every day so that scheduling doesn't become more work than the exercise. (One tip is that if your kids are on the same sports team, you can exercise together while they practice. That won't get you five days/week but it's a start.)
- If you are married or in a relationship, recruit them as a partner.
- Go to some exercise classes at your local Y or any gym.
- It's okay to have more than one exercise buddy - in fact, it is better. If you are all friends and want to workout together, that can be great, too!!
Remember if you are really not enjoying getting active and exercising, you are not likely to keep it up. Make it fun for you!! Make it social!! Make it happen!!
You can do it!! Start today!

Are You Using Meditation To Be Healthy, Whole, and Happy?
create new neural circuits in our brain which allows us to use more of our brain.
Meditation also decreases blood pressure, pulse rate, the stress hormone, cortisol, and inflammatory substances. It's also linked to a decrease in diabetes and heart disease! If that's not enough, there is evidence that it decreases and sometimes eliminates chronic pain. Yes, people who have been in pain for years without any relief may find it with meditation.
It has also been linked to greater success and life satisfaction! What are you waiting for?
There are many different types of meditation and all seem to be beneficial. My suggestion is to find the one, or ones, that work best for you and integrate them into your daily routine. If you have never meditated before, have fun and experiment with different types. Personally, when I am feeling most stressed and unable to easily quiet my mind I like guided imagery meditations. They can lead anywhere you need to go!!Don't forget that yoga and tai chi are forms of meditation, too. Walking can be a form of meditation, too, if you really bring yourself into the present moment and focus on the now. If you find your mind wandering just bring it back to your breathing or the feeling and rhythm of your feet on the ground. Enjoy the surroundings and relax. Listen to your breathing.

Looking at the pictures I picked, I just want to also state that meditation can be done anywhere and in any position. You may enjoy being outside at sunrise or sunset but you can close your office door and sit at your desk and meditate mid-day if you want, You can meditate while laying in bed. Whatever works for you!
As always, please be gentle with yourself. If your mind reverts to stressful thoughts, thank them for trying to help you and release them. We are trained to think of the future and dwell in the past, a meditation practice will help bring those thoughts into the present. It is a practice that we need to do regularly to change old thought patterns. I'd love to hear about your experiences.
Have fun and be heathy, whole, and happy!

Benefits of Broccoli
I have talked to many people who haven't even tried broccoli because they assume they won't like it because of the way it looks or they had it once and didn't like it. One thing I stress over and over again with my clients (and my kids) is that if you try a food and don't like it, try it prepared differently. Many times even trying it prepared the same way multiple times will change if you like it or not.
I love broccoli in general but I my favorite ways to have it are raw with hummus, steamed with a little olive oil and lemon juice, steamed on a salad, and roasted with lots of healthy seasonings. I want to point out that my son, whose arm I have to twist to eat or try vegetables, actually loves when I roast broccoli.
So here are just a few reasons to eat more broccoli:
- Helps prevent cancer. (A nutrient in broccoli called, sulforaphane, actually targets and kills cancer cells!)
- Fights Heart Disease
- Fights Diabetes
- Improves your immune system.
- Decreases overeating. (Broccoli fills you up more quickly. It's hard to eat too many calories of just broccoli.)
- Good source of protein.
- Contains the following vitamins and nutrients:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin K
- Vitamin B6
- Folate
- Beta-carotene
- Selenium
- Magnesium
- Calcium
- Potassium
- Zinc

What Does Healthy Mean To You?
I love reading people's definitions of "healthy". There is no right or wrong answer but I personally think sometimes people are settling for less than they deserve. When I think of being healthy, it goes way beyond just physical health. Being healthy incorporates our relationships, our attitude, our mental health, our self-love, our spiritual life, and our activities.
Often we get caught up in our long to-do list and don't take time to think about what is important to us. When I am in that state, I don't even think about taking good care of myself. It's easy to stop and pick up fast food for me and my family and move on to the next activity. I've come to realize that I need to plan for that frenzied feeling and determine the best option for feeding myself and my family. I also need to slow down. Life is meant to be enjoyed. When we are not enjoying it, we aren't at optimal health.
So today, take a deep breath and just be in the moment. Do this several times throughout the day. It might only take 10 seconds each time. We owe it to ourselves to at least start there.
